I got the internet again

Today I got the group together to go to Juliaca, about 45 minutes from Chijnaya. It costs about $2 round trip and we´re piled into a van. Fewer people than yesterday though.

I actually did write a lot last night and earlier today on my computer back in my room, but then I forgot to download it onto my mp3 player before leaving for Juliaca. I´ll definitely have the internet again next Saturday if not before, so keep checking the blog.

It´s good to get email from everyone even if I can´t reply individually. When I go back through Pukara today, I´ll try to call home.

Geronima, my host, is with us today in Juliaca. It´s a big city compared to Chijnaya and Pukara, but it´s no Cusco. The Chijnayans basically come to the market, buy what they need and then run. They told us multiple times to hold onto our stuff. Honestly, it isn´t that sketchy to me. I´m watching my stuff, but no more than in Cusco.

I am going to buy more socks and underwear. With three pairs each I have to wash them too often. I also need some Band-Aids, as my skin has split in two places: on my right thumb and the nail edge of my middle finger. It´s a combination of the cold dry air and occasionally having cold, wet hands. I´ve got great lotion with me, but it´s no match for the dry air here.

Gotta run!

Hi Kate - loved the photos. What is the story (history) of the hats the women are wearing in last week's pictures?

Alison was home this week. I don't remember if I knew before you left; she is headed to New Haven next week and will be doing a post grad fellowship in social work. All very exciting except for the very very puny stipend. Anyway - we have been busy with that and things are finally calming down as she is mostly ready for her big move.
Meantime - I am working on some applications and will bring you up to date on my job search when you return.
Thought I might call Josh to say "hi" this weekend... I am not sure if I will catch him. Thought he might want to come for dinner.

It is AMAZING to think that you will be on your way home soon. Has the time flown by? Has it been what you expected? Do you feel that you are making progress? We can talk about it all over coffee pretty soon!

There was a volcano eruption in Peru - at least that's what Mark said...did you hear about that? South of Lima, I think.

Hot and dry here - still 77 degrees at almost midnight. Maybe we can hit the pool in July!
Hope you are fine - I am so looking forward to seeing you.
